“Nearly 2 million jobs have been eliminated in the past four months alone.”

That’s me. I contribute to that number which was quoted by the washingtonpost.com on January 9, 2009. Oh boy does it suck.

Like many Americans, particularly the 2.6 million of us who have lost our jobs in the last year, I really don’t know what’s ahead. The media prophets and economic seers are telling me it’s probably not gonna get any better- even with the almighty Obama taking office in two short weeks. So what’s a guy to do? The best he can I suppose.

Last week I packed my bags and jumped on a plane after staying out all night on the eve of the New Year (special thanks to Eric, Jenny and Joe for kicking my ass onto the plane). The plane took off and at the end of the trip I found myself in Frederick, Maryland. A bit of a change from my hometown, the city I love, Portland, Oregon. All in all, after one week, I enjoy it here. My friends, the Greens, who I am staying with are great friends and are very helpful and gracious. It’s really quite an interesting household right now. Hermann, ironically, was laid off the exact same day I was for pretty much the same reasons. Crazy. Betsy is fortunate enough to have a part-time job at the mall but unfortunate enough to work about 5 hours a week. Sweet. And then Ben, the only one currently with an actual job, will be going in for his final shift tomorrow at Target where he was a seasonal worker for the holidays. So, we are a house full of healthy, hardworking, energetic, positive (most of the time), God fearing, statistic proving, job searching, benefits collecting, unemployed Americans. Anyone still doubting we’re in a recession? I’ll punch you in the nose if you say yes.

One thing I do enjoy about being on the east coast and so near DC is that people seem to understand politics more than they do in Portland. Or at least there is a broader spectrum of opinions out here as opposed to the coffee sipping trendsetters who only seem to know how to regurgitate whatever they read in the Willamette Week. It’s refreshing to find that not everyone is sacrificing goats and pledging their children to the service of Barrack Obama. I mean, he’s a great guy, but c’mon- Portland is ready to burn the constitution and crown him Pharaoh.

Anyways… I haven’t written consistently for a long time. So I thought I’d give this Word-press thing a try. If you’re reading this, great. Thanks. Hope you enjoy. I’ll keep this first one short and try and write some more later. I’ll write about a lot of things- you know, to keep it interesting. Things like politics, religion/theology, the economy, current events, my life, Tom Cruise, good food, good coffee and good women. Should be a fun blog. My bias will likely come out but hey, it’s my blog. If it’s too much let me know. I’ll send you a cake.

Well, see you later.
